Alan Claude Hopewell

August 24, 1930 — May 24, 2010

Alan C. Hopewell, 79, a retired educator, of Henderson, passed away May 23, 2010. He was born Aug. 18, 1930, in Chicago, and was a nineyear resident of Nevada.

Alans great interest, skill and passion for sports, also led to a successful career in high school, collegiate and professional football, where he obtained a brief stint with the legendary Green Bay Packers before sustaining a careerending injury. Alan loved pure jazz music. He received various advanced credentials from UC Berkeley and San Jose State University, which followed his masters degree received from City University of New York and his undergraduate bachelor of science degree in physical education from New York University in 1951. Alans illustrious career in education spanned over 50 years in which he attained numerous leading administrative positions in high schools and junior high schools. He was endeared by many students and was honored as a prominent counselor, coach and advisor to thousands of students in New York City and the San JoseBerkeley Bay areas of California. Alans deep involvement in the development of students educational goals and scholarships, sports careers and lifelong goals to benefit society, earned him prestigious awards and honors from the field of education. Many of Alans students, who attained celebrated star status, attributed much of their success to his coaching and counsel. They kept in touch with Alan regularly after graduation and well along in their professional and married lives.

Alan and surviving wife, Marilyn, were members and contributors to Victory Missionary Baptist Church in Las Vegas, where they have a host of friends and colleagues who share their Christian beliefs and credos.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo Bruce Hopewell and Ruth Johnston sister, Louise Miller and daughter, Lisa Hopewell.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn, after 25 years of marriage son, Kris Benum and daughterinlaw, Lisa Marie Hopewell, of Sunnyvale, Calif. son, Darion Branch James Branch of San Rafael, Calif. and brother, Leo Bruce Hopewell and wife, Mary Ann Hopewell, of Napa, Calif.
