Alice Antonette Baxter

June 19, 1921 — May 20, 2018

Alice was born Alice Glavan in Aurora, Minnesota, she was the oldest of four children with two sisters, Olga and Mary, and a brother Louis. Alice loved to be a helper; she especially enjoyed assisting her mother as she sewed. Alice loved playing with her sisters and brother, and joyfully took the role of the leader and teacher of her siblings.

When Alice was only twelve her parents, Louis and Antoinette, passed away in a car accident. Sadly the family had to be split up; Alice and Olga went into foster care, and Mary and Louis went with relatives. While living with her foster parents, Mildred and Ed LaHay, Alice learned to love playing sports. Mildred and Ed not only raised Alice and Olga, they even made sure the two girls completed college. Alice graduated from Roosevelt High School in Virginia, Minnesota. She then attended nursing school at St. Joseph in Ashland, Wisconsin.

Alice worked in a Catholic Hospital until a friend enlisted in the Army. Alice decided to enlist, but she chose the Navy. She spent four years in service when she met James Baxter, a pilot on one of her flights. At first Alice wasn't particularly interested in James, but after spending a day at a football game with him, she changed her mind. She says she can still remember her first meal with James, it was onion soup, and she loves onion soup to this day.

James and Alice were married in 1947. They started their life together at Seattle Sandpoint Naval Base in Washington. Their first child, a boy Jimmy was born in 1948; followed by Michael, Timothy, and Kathy. James stayed in the Navy for 23 years. Alice enjoyed traveling with her family to Guam, Hawaii, Florida, and Whidbey Island, Washington. Jim retired from the Navy in 1964. They moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where he took a job at the test site. He worked at the test site for 10 years. Jim passed in 2002; they had been married for 55 years. She lived alone until 2011 when she moved into Silver Sky at Deer Springs.
