Darin Dockstader

June 30, 1966 — December 6, 2023

Darin J Dockstader, 57, of Henderson, Nevada, passed away at home on December 6, 2023 following a brief illness.

Darin was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, and grew up in Denver and Salt Lake City. Darin earned a BS in Philosophy from the University of Utah in 1989 and a PhD in Philosophy from Claremont Graduate University in 2006.

Teaching was Darin's life work, and it gave him great satisfaction. He taught philosophy for 30 years, initially at California State University Dominguez Hills and Mount Saint Mary's College. In 2007, Darin began a distinguished career as a professor at College of Southern Nevada. He was known as an excellent teacher who cared for his students.

At CSN, Darin served as lead faculty and was twice elected Faculty Senate Chair, working tirelessly to support effective shared governance and to promote student and faculty welfare. Darin was chosen as the statewide representative for all NSHE Faculty Senate Chairs to the Board of Regents. Most recently, he was serving as the Legal Defense Chair for the CSN Nevada Faculty Alliance chapter. Darin co-authored a book chapter on higher education shared governance and was writing an open-access critical thinking textbook.

Darin had an eclectic range of interests. In college, he raced motorcycles and became a fixture in the punk rock scene. He was a leader in the student anti-apartheid movement, and in 1986, testified before the United Nations in support of anti-apartheid action. Darin loved music, and once sang and played a leaf-spring in a punk band called The Clocks. As a visual artist, Darin combined action painting with pop art and symbolic logic. He enjoyed cycling, skiing and boating.

Darin was a loving husband and father who was deeply loved. He will be profoundly missed by his immediate and extended family, as well as friends and colleagues. He is survived by his wife of 24 years Laura Yavitz, daughter Ameliea Dockstader, sister Shelly Poole, niece and nephew Isis and Orion Poole, and parents Marilyn and Bruce Dockstader.
