Delbert along with his twin brother Elbert were born on June 19th, 1944 in Hayward, CA. to Wanda and Gene Lewallen. Elbert and Delbert were the younger brothers of Donnie Gene. Wanda and Gene moved throughout California before moving to Casa Grande and eventually settling in Stanfield AZ. As young children Elbert and Delbert took tap dancing lessons. Delbert and Elbert attended Casa Grande Union High School where Delbert played the cornet in the marching band, even winning state championships and a trip to Disneyland.
Delbert joined the army November 8, 1963 and was originally stationed in Fort Hamilton, New York. Delbert received his diploma/GED while in the service. Delbert served most of his time in Germany where is was a PVT E2 (P), where he worked as an engineer for Company B, 249th. Delbert received an honorable discharge on October 17, 1966. He was very proud of his military service.
After Delbert came home from service he met Patricia Watkins in Casa Grande, they married on July 4, 1969. They divorced several years later. Delbert and Patricia have one daughter, Lorrie (Lewallen) Mueller who was born in August of 1970.
Delbert worked many jobs throughout the years including: taxi driver, bartender, and Casino card dealer just to name a few. Delbert made his career working as a painter for union #159, he was a hard worker and worked as many hours as they offered. He worked anywhere he could from Ajo AZ, California, Colorado, Utah and many other places. He was a member of the union for over 35 years. Delbert moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in the late 70's and worked on painting most of the casinos in Las Vegas, oftentimes hanging off the side of buildings to get the job done. Delbert and Patricia are proud grandparents to 5 grandchildren: Bryce, Korey, Haylee, Ricky, and Hannah.
Delbert loved country music and encouraged his grandchildren to play music, even passing his cornet on to Hannah. Delbert encouraged his daughter, grandchildren and anyone that would listen to find a job that will give you retirement, that was very important to him. Delbert grew up close to his many cousins, aunts and uncles, his grandmother ""Ma"" Sudbury and Granny, Bertha Lewallen, who all loved him dearly.
Delbert loved to travel and traveled to many countries including Mexico, Scotland, Jamaica, London England, and Ireland where he kissed the Blarney Stone. Delbert also loved the great outdoors which included yearly dove hunting trips every year in September with his family. Family Fishing trips every year that included deep sea fishing in New Jersey with the brothers of his longtime companion Mary Hayducka. Delbert and Mary enjoyed going on several cruises and were together for over 20 years until her death in 2007. Mary accompanied Delbert on many of these trips.
Delbert made many lifelong friends including Mary's Nephew Ray Nogera and Kenneth Burrell who he met when they were about 8 years old. Kenneth loved the Lewallen family so much he made it official when he married Delbert's cousin, Leah. Wanda often referring to Kenneth as her adopted of unofficial son. I have been told Delbert helped many of his friends and family with various things and that all they had to do was call and he was there.
Delbert also enjoyed dressing up as Santa and participating in the annual Santa Run raising money for Toys for Tots.
Delbert loved football and was a diehard San Francisco 49's fan and attended many home games in San Francisco over the years and lined the walls of his home and garage with 49's memorabilia.
Delbert was proud of his Choctaw heritage and attended many events in Bakersfield, CA and AZ. Delbert loved western movies and would watch the same western movies and tv shoes over and over, especially John Wayne movies and would always ask ""do you know who that is?"". If you did not know he would ""educate"" you. Delbert went through a lot in his life, from growth hormone shots to breaking nearly every bone in his body at least once. I used to joke he was the Bionic Man held together with plates and screws and rods. He never let his injuries get the best of him, he was a fighter to the very end.
Delbert was loved by many and will be missed very much. Delbert was preceded in death by his parents, Wanda and Gene Lewallen, brothers Donnie and Elbert along with many cousins.
