Elizabeth Brown of Henderson, NV, age 80, passed away July 2, 2018 from a short battle with ovarian cancer. She was born July 22, 1937 in Foreston, MN to Lenora and David Sandquist. After growing up in Sauk Rapids, MN, Elizabeth was a 1959 graduate of Gustavus Aldolphus College in St. Peter, MN. Elizabeth's first teaching position was in South St. Paul, MN and taught 3rd and 4th grade for 40 years in Chatfield, MN, Waseca, MN, Fountain City, WI and Las Vegas, NV. Elizabeth moved to Las Vegas, NV in 1984 eventually settling in Henderson, NV and retired from teaching in 2000. Elizabeth earned a Master's of Education at the Univeristy of Nevada in 1992.
Elizabeth was an active participant in Nevada State Education Association throughout her career becoming a convention delgate for several NSEA's state conventions as well as chaired multiple NSEA commitees. She then joined the Nevada Retired Teachers Association and during retirement, she earned the NSEA Retired Educator Award in 2014 for her leadership and dedication to educators in Nevada.
Elizabeth cherished her home ownership at Sun City MacDonald Ranch Community. Her home and her participation in a plethora of clubs, committees, and social events were the shining sources of her exuberance and love of her fellow MacDonald Ranch residents. She regaled in her friendships in her community while living here. Elizabeth was proud of being the first duplex owner in MacDonald Ranch and created and chaired the first house committee for the community. Elizabeth served in leadership roles and committee membership such as the Properties Committee, House Committee, created and managed the art wall, was a Board Member for four (4) years, Corkers, Solos, Creative Crew and Community on Patrol (COPs).
Elizabeth was an avid traveler with Las Vegas Senior Tripsters. She adored the theater with her season tickets for the Smith Center for several years. She enjoyed many bus trips and activities with her friends to nearby theatrical and music venues, and often visited her home state of MN to enjoy family vacations at Kim's Wisconsin lake house to visit all the grandkids and grand dogs. Elizabeth was ""Queen"" for Chapeaux Rouge (Red Hats) for several years extending her friendships and memories beyond her avocation. Elizabeth served Community Lutheran Church (CLC) as an information booth member and alterguild and was a member of her church for 32 years.
Elizabeth is survived by her two daughters, Kimberly and her husband David Schoenecker of Minneapolis, MN and Kirstin, and her husband David Erwin, of New Orleans, LA, her 5 grandchildren: Morgan and Murphy Schoenecker and Mitchell, McKenzie, and Matthew Erwin, her brother John Sandquist and his wife, Kathryn and several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Pauline Fern, Esther Wickenden, Helen Belmont, Margaret Selander and brother Warren Sandquist, and nephews Jeff Fern and Jorin Sandquist.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 27, 2018, 10 am, at Community Lutheran Church located at 3720 E Tropicana, Las Vegas, NV 89121. Liz will be remembered as a wonderful, kind and loving mom, grandmother, friend, teacher, and community leader. Liz will be greatly missed in her MacDonald Ranch community and by everyone who knew her.
