James Frederick ""Jim"" Horner January 1, 1937 - July 23, 2018
James Frederick ""Jim"" Horner, 81, died at his home in Henderson, Nevada on Monday evening, July 23, 2018. He was born in Wabash, Indiana on January 1, 1937 to Bert and Gladys (Harris) Cramer, and was adopted at age ten by Charles and Wilma (Odle) Horner. Jim attended numerous elementary schools in his hometown and served in the Army Reserves in 1954 before graduation at Wabash High School in 1955. He entered the Navy in June 1955, and after boot camp and additional training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, he served in Japan for 4 years as a meteorologist. After two years aboard the USS Lexington CVA 16, Jim was treated for a service-connected back injury. After multiple surgeries and over a year in the hospital, he was given an honorable discharge from the Navy, citing debilitating lumbar spine issues.
Jim took advantage of his veteran's benefits and earned accounting degrees beginning at Indiana Business College and ending at Purdue University. He worked in the accounting field for 20 years, including as a controller for 6 years at the Coca Cola Bottling Company and 3 years at Orchard Ridge Country Club in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He moved to Henderson, Nevada in 1979 and enjoyed a successful career as a purchasing agent for PEPCON, Stauffer Chemical, and Pioneer Chemical, but took an early retirement in 1998 when he was deemed legally blind from rapid onset glaucoma.
Jim accepted Jesus Christ as Savior at age 16 at a revival teen night at the Methodist church and renewed his commitment to Christ at the Grace Brethren Church in 1972. For 37 years, he enjoyed the blessing of a loving wife, Barbara (Eakright) Horner and a large extended family. Affectionately known as ""Oppy"" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was also known for his strong work ethic, loyalty, volunteerism, compassion for others, and love for his family. He enjoyed listening to political news and kept up with world issues throughout his life. Jim was also a charter member of the Church at Lake Mead and a longtime supporter of Lake Mead Christian Ministries. He spent his last seven years totally blind, but refocused his life on helping others through generosity and prayer.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents and beloved wife; his son Lonnie Murphy and step-daughter, Lois Stroer; his siblings Billy, Burt, Dorothy and Evelyn; his grandson Jonathan and great-granddaughter Miranda. He is survived by his daughter Sue (Sam) Blakeley and son David Murphy of Henderson, NV; step-daughter Lana (Bill) Campbell of Churubusco, IN; brother Charles (Shirley) Horner of Palatka, FL, 7 grandsons Brad, Benjamin, and Brian Blakeley, David Murphy, Jr., Michael, Kevin, and Matthew Campbell, 6 granddaughters Barbie Blakeley McCollum, Bridget Ramirez, Heather Creel, Jessica and Donna Murphy, and Tracie Brady, and 33 great grandchildren.
The family invites friends to join them in a Celebration of Life service at the Church at Lake Mead, 655 E. Lake Mead Parkway on Monday, July 30, 2018 at 4:30 PM. The service will be preceded by visitation/viewing at 3:30 PM and followed by a reception at 5:30 PM. Burial will be at noon on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, NV. Final arrangements have been handled by Davis Funeral Homes.
In lieu of flowers, Jim requested memorial contributions be made to Lake Mead Christian Ministries.
