Mary Virginia (Mary Vern) Bennett of Henderson, NV, passed away on October 22, 2026 in Henderson, NV.

Mary Vern was born in San Luis Obispo, CA to Vernon and Berwyn Meacham on April 30, 1929. She lived most of her childhood in San Luis Obispo and received her BA degree in Physical Education from what was called at the time, Fresno State College in 1950, returning to receive her teaching credential in 1957. Mary Vern taught high school physical education and social studies in California for 20 years before retiring in 1979. Mary Vern continued her support of education by providing scholarships for a number of years to UNLV Nursing and Physical Therapy students and to students at Morrison Institute of Technology (Morrison Tech) in Illinois.

She remained active after retirement volunteering for the American Red Cross in California before moving to Henderson, Nevada in 1988. Here, she remained active as a volunteer for many years with the Children’s Service Guild, the Blind Center of (Las Vegas) Nevada, and the Special Olympics of Southern Nevada. She also continued to enjoy the outdoors playing golf at courses in Nevada and across the United States, and spent decades playing bridge with friends. When home, working on five-thousand piece jigsaw puzzles with her great-grandchildren brought her tremendous joy over the years.

Mary Vern is preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, James Bennett, her parents and her brothers, Thomas, Malcolm, and Robert. She is survived by her children Brian Bennett (Joanne) and Carolyn Sabo (Gustav, deceased), along with her beloved granddaughter, Leslie Burton, and four great-grandchildren, Robert, Thomas, Scarlett, and Abrielle.

Memorial services will be private. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the family of staff at Sunrise Senior Living, Henderson and BeLoved Hospice Services.
