Obituary

Matthew Erik "Chooch" Mathis

Matthew Erik Mathis, lovingly known as "Chooch," 27, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away surrounded by the love of those who knew him.

Matthew was the beloved son of Kelly Gonzales and Tony Mathis, and the brother of Gabriel Mathis. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jacob Mathis, and his beloved Gramps, Alvin Gonzales, both of whom Matthew loved.deeply.

Matthew was a wild kid from the very beginning-mischievous, rebellious, and always finding his own way to keep life interesting. But beneath that wild spirit was a genuinely good-hearted person who cared deeply about the people around him. He was colorful, caring, thoughtful, and never afraid to be himself.

The nickname "Chooch" has a story that began when Matthew and Gabriel were children. Gabriel was unable to pronounce Matthew's name correctly, and it would come out sounding like "Machoo." Eventually, "Choo Choo" became "Chooch," and the name stuck with Matthew for the rest of his life. To those who loved him, Chooch will always be a name filled with childhood memories, laughter, and love.

Matthew loved music and singing, as well as bowling and golfing. He had a personality that could fill a room, and his presence was something people remembered.

Matthew had a special way of showing people that he cared. He was often the one to pick up the phone just to check in, make sure you were doing okay, and see how life was going. He cared deeply about the people he loved and always wanted to make sure we were alright.

Matthew shared a deep and special love for his late brother, Jacob, and his beloved Gramps, Alvin Gonzales. Their place in his heart never faded, and the love he carried for them remained an important part of who he was. It brings comfort to know that Chooch is now reunited with two people he loved so dearly.

One of the greatest joys in Matthew's life was being an uncle. He was incredibly proud of his nieces and nephews and loved being a part of their lives. His love and pride for them are among the memories his brother, Gabriel, will always treasure.

Matthew's life was far too short, but he left behind memories that will never fade -the mischievous moments, the laughter, the music, the phone calls, and most importantly, the love he gave to his family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who had the privilege of loving him.

A viewing and celebration of Matthew's life will be held on October 1 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Davis Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Las Vegas, Nevada. Dinner will be served, and live music will be provided as family and friends gather to remember, celebrate, and honor Chooch's life.
