Robert Frederick Stegner

Robert Frederick Stegner, 84, passed away at his home In Las Vegas, NV on September 28, 2022.

 

He was born November 4, 1938, in Chico CA to Cleo Margaret Trowbridge and Albert Frederick Stegner.  When Bob was still a young boy, his parents divorced and his dad married Katherine Mosbrucker whom he lovingly referred to as “mom’.

 

Bob spent 28 years serving his country in the Air Force retiring with the rank of E-8.  He began his Air Force career as a fireman on a crash rescue team.  He later cross-trained in Vehicle Operations and Maintenance Scheduling and Production Control.  He ended his career as the Superintendent of Vehicle Operations for the 833rd Transportation Squadron at Holloman AFB, NM.  He served two tours of duty in France where he learned to speak fluent French, two tours in Korea where he earned a 2nd Dan black belt in the Tang Soo Do, Moo Duck Kwan style of karate, two tours of duty in Germany where he was awarded the Schutzenschnur the German Armed Forces Marksmanship Award and spent six months on Guam in support of the Vietnam war.

 

He received many awards including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm.  While on his second tour in Germany, his Vehicle operations branch was recognized by the National Department of Transportation as the best Vehicle Management Unit in the Air Force for 1982.

 

After retiring from the Air Force, Bob was employed with the United States Postal Service.  He began his postal service career as a letter carrier in Eugene, OR, but was quickly promoted to Manager, Fleet Operations, and subsequently promoted to the manager of Vehicle Maintenance for the Las Vegas District from which he retired in 2001. He also served on the Western Area Vehicle Maintenance Audit Team.

 

Bob was an avid fisherman and hunter.  He spent many hours on the rivers & lakes of Oregon and Washington with his kids, his dad, his Uncle Marvin, and other family and friends.  He went on several elk hunts in the mountains of eastern Oregon with family and friends every once in a while, actually bagging game.  He also enjoyed photography and music and especially after retirement, building computers for family and friends. 

 

Bob was a loving and giving husband, son, brother, father, and grandfather. He led a full & rich life before surrendering quietly to death in his home.  He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Charlene, 3 sons: Michel McCorkle (Diana) of Poway, CA, Bradley Stegner of Prescott Valley, AZ, and David Stegner (Pam) of Myrtle Point, OR; 2 daughters: Gweneth Tambe (Brian) of Eagle Point, OR, and Cheryll Kyser of Apache Junction, AZ, a sister, Sharon (Bob) Calhoun of Springfield, OR, 12 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.  Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Al & Kay Stegner, his mother, Cleo Walllenwaber, and his older sister, Gweneth Stegner.

 

Visitation will be from 4:00 – 6:00 PM, Tuesday, October 11, at Davis Funeral Homes and Memorial Park, 6200 S Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:40 AM, Wednesday, October 12, at Southern Nevada Veterans’ Cemetery Chapel, Boulder City, NV with Bob’s son, David Stegner, officiating.  Burial will follow at the Southern Nevada Veterans’ Cemetery.  Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Homes and Memorial Park.

 

Following the services, refreshments will be served at the Stegner home, 7973 Flametree Ct, LV  NV.
