Rosalba Restrepo (Barreto) was born to Obdulia Jimenez, a homemaker, and Jorge Barreto, a military member, in Bogota, Colombia on June 26th, 1941. She was the third child of five siblings Jorge (who passed in 2024), Gloria Estela, Juan Manuel, and Olga. As a young child she was energetic, playful, and a jokester to her siblings. She is survived by her sons, Juan-Carlos and Luis Fernando, her daughters-in-law and six grandchildren who all miss her very much.

Rosalba Restrepo (Barreto) nació en Bogota, Colombia, el 26 de junio de 1941, hija de Obdulia Jiménez, ama de casa, y Jorge Barreto, miembro de las fuerzas militares. Fue la tercera de cinco hermanos: Jorge (fallecido en 2024), Gloria Estela, Juan Manuel y Olga. De niña era enérgica, juguetona y siempre bromista con sus hermanos. Le sobreviven sus hijos, Juan-Carlos y Luis Fernando, sus nueras y seis nietos, quienes la extrañan profundamente.

Her whole life was characterized by strength and non-wavering endurance. At the age of 5, she overcame a debilitating illness that almost left her unable to walk. Medical treatment and her mother's consistent support helped her grow up like a normal child. As a young woman she worked with the military, a job she loved very much, as it brought her closer to her father whom she admired. She later went on to work at a prestigious bank in Bogota.

Toda su vida se caracterizó por su fortaleza y una resistencia inquebrantable. A los 5 años, superó una enfermedad debilitante que casi la deja sin poder caminar; gracias al tratamiento médico y al apoyo constante de su madre, logró crecer como una niña normal. En su juventud trabajó con el ejército, un empleo que amaba porque la acercaba a su padre, a quien admiraba. Más tarde, trabajó en un prestigioso banco en Bogotá.

In the early 1980's, she decided to leave the comforts of her home and her job to migrate to the United States, fearlessly and not knowing the language, she still made the endeavor in hopes of a better future for herself and her young child. Her destination was Miami. Although she had friends who helped, she did not have family, was homesick and questioned if she had made the right choice. Despite those challenges, she endured. She was brave and persevered even when it seemed all odds were against her.

Alrededor de 1980, decidió dejar las comodidades de su hogar y su empleo para emigrar a los Estados Unidos, con la esperanza de un futuro mejor para ella y su hijo pequeño. Su destino fue Miami. Aunque contó con la ayuda de amigos, no tenía familia cerca; sentía nostalgia por su tierra y llegó a cuestionar si había tomado la decisión correcta. A pesar de esos desafíos, resistió. Fue valiente y perseveró incluso cuando las circunstancias parecían estar en su contra.

Her faith did not waver and God, who was always with her, provided. Throughout the years she worked multiple jobs and overcame obstacles and challenges including learning the language and acclimating to the different systems in the United States. Family was of the utmost importance to Rosalba: from looking out for her siblings, nieces and nephews to maintaining an amicable co-parenting relationship with her ex-husband.

Su fe nunca flaqueó y Dios, que siempre estuvo con ella, proveyó. A lo largo de los años, desempeñó múltiples trabajos y superó obstáculos, incluyendo el aprendizaje del idioma y la adaptación a los diferentes sistemas de los Estados Unidos. La familia era lo más importante para Rosalba: desde velar por sus hermanos, sobrinas y sobrinos, hasta mantener una relación de crianza compartida y amistosa con su exesposo.

Rosy or Rosita, as she was fondly known, worked tirelessly to provide for her two boys. Her biggest pride was when each joined the service as U.S. Marines. Through them, she felt she felt a reconnection to her father's legacy and the life he lived. In Miami, Rosalba worked for 20 years in food service at Fairlawn Elementary where she helped nourish children with home-cooked meals, kindness and a smile. She was also a focal member of the Seventh day Adventist, Iglesia del Ebenezer where she served for many years and led several ministries.

Rosy o Rosita, como se le conocía cariñosamente, trabajó incansablemente para sacar adelante a sus dos hijos. Su mayor orgullo fue cuando cada uno de ellos se unió al servicio como Infantes de Marina de los EE. UU. (Marines). A través de ellos, sintió una reconexión con el legado de su padre y la vida que él vivió. En Miami, Rosalba trabajó durante 20 años en el servicio de alimentos de la Escuela Primaria Fairlawn, donde nutrió a los niños con comidas caseras, bondad y una sonrisa. También fue un miembro fundamental de la Iglesia Adventista del Séptimo Día Ebenezer, donde sirvió durante muchos años y lideró varios ministerios.

After a fruitful life in Miami, she decided to retire and relocate to Las Vegas to fully enjoy being a grandmother to grandchildren. In Las Vegas, Rosalba made a new home and formed new bonds with her church, Paraiso Las Vegas Seventh Day Adventist. She spent the last 12 years of her life serving God, her family and friends. She lent a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on, continuous prayers for those in need or simply her friendship to everyone around her.

Tras una vida fructífera en Miami, decidió jubilarse y mudarse a Las Vegas para disfrutar plenamente de su faceta de abuela. En Las Vegas, Rosalba formó un nuevo hogar y creó nuevos vínculos con su iglesia, Paraíso Las Vegas Seventh-day Adventist. Pasó los últimos 12 años de su vida sirviendo a Dios, a su familia y a sus amigos. Siempre ofreció una mano amiga, un hombro sobre el cual llorar, oraciones constantes por los necesitados o, simplemente, su amistad a todos los que la rodeaban.

Up until her last days, Rosalba awoke every morning at 5am to connect with her friends from Miami for morning prayers for all those in need. Her playful and joking manner is still evident in her sons and grandchildren, who love to joke and be playful with their loved ones.

Rosy leaves us an example of a life well lived, dedicated to service, faith and love for others. We do not say goodbye, but rather, until we meet again, as her faith in Jesus Christ tells us that one day we will all be together again.

Hasta sus últimos días, Rosalba se despertaba cada mañana a las 5:00 a. m. para unirse a sus amigos de Miami en oraciones matutinas por los necesitados. Su carácter alegre y bromista sigue vivo en sus hijos y nietos, a quienes les encanta bromear y ser juguetones con sus seres queridos.

Rosy nos deja el ejemplo de una vida bien vivida, dedicada al servicio, la fe y el amor por los demás. No decimos adiós, sino "hasta que nos volvamos a encontrar", pues su fe en Jesucristo nos dice que un día estaremos todos juntos de nuevo.
