Anthony Douglas Burkes

Anthony “Tony” Douglas Burkes, the youngest son of the late Jerry Burkes and Lula Cowart, was born on September 6, 1954 in Long Beach, California. Tony passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Tony (as he was known by all) lived in California most of his life and was educated through the Compton Unified School District – attending McKinley Elementary School, Vanguard Junior High School, and Centennial High School. Tony was the 1971-72 Senior Class President, a member of the Apache Band, the Key Club and the Student Council. Tony attended the University of Pine Bluff in Arkansas. He also joined Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

Tony united with the Second Benevolent Baptist Church at an early age where he was a faithful member serving as a Junior Deacon, serving as an Usher, singing in the Choir as well as participating in many other youth activities.

Tony was avid Raiders fan and was looking forward to the team moving to Las Vegas so he could attend the games.

Tony met and married Juanita Henry and to this union three daughters were born.

Tony was loved and will be missed by his many family members and friends.

Tony is preceded in death by his mother and father and his former wife, Juanita Henry Blunt.

Tony leaves to mourn two brothers, Philip (Rosemary) Burkes of Round Rock, Texas and Jerry Wright (Ann) of Center Point, Alabama; one sister, Lillian Walker of Los Angeles, California; three daughters, Quinshaunta (Cameron Sr.) Bell, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Anetra Burkes of Los Angeles, California, and Justina Burkes of Little Rock, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Dejah Farmer, Cameron Bell, Jr. and Amari Bell, all of Pine Bluff Arkansas; nephews and nieces, Ronnie (Tamara) Wright of Orlando, Florida; Shoná (Larry Jr.) Henderson of Little Elm, Texas; Nathaniel Walker, Valencia Walker, Mario Walker, Corey Walker and Carette Walker, all of Los Angeles, California; and other family and friends.

Tony’s remains were laid to rest at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California.
